What really happens when we die & when the bible says when one dies the spirity returns to God who gave it?

Does that mean the person who died also returns to God or does it mean God takes the life out of that person's spirit and that person that gets buried six feet underground decaying body is waiting for Christ to return & resurrect the body?????????????
