Why do people refuse to see Scarlette's Mum for the brave & gutsy?

It seems to me that the first reports did show her as brave and gutsy for standing up to the authorities in Goa, but subsequent reports have revealed a somewhat 'unorthodox' approach to child rearing and family life which have muddied that image.
