If you take friendships seriously, communication is important so spending time with someone is difficult if it is long distance, but your can e-mail or talk to each other on the phone and sometimes communicate better that way, but you miss out on a lot of stuff that you get when you talk face to face which you get more of when they are in your neighborhood or something, so both situations can work if there is good communication between the both of you and both of you like each other, but if one person doesn't like the other person, the person who likes the other person more might probably get hurt because they have different expectations which are often hard to communicate and accept once you are in a relationship and not everyone takes responsibility in relationships and you need to find someone who thinks the same way you do in order for the relationship to work.
